"The three Bowies-Rezin P., James and John-engaged in buying the African negroes taken from Spanish slavers by Lafitte's men, and carrying them through the swamps to Louisiana for sale. ...On one occasion James Bowie started with about ninety negroes to Alexandria, when the whole number escaped and fled to the west. He followed them as far as the Colorado, but could never recover them." -A PICTORIAL HISTORY OF TEXAS 1883
